Labor pain is considered as one of the most difficult and extremely painful time for a woman who is about to give birth to a baby. The woman who has gone through it knows the excessive pain that comes along with it. During such a time, it’s obvious that women want a way out or anything that can make the pain less excruciating. Epidural is seen as a way out in such situations. Epidural is basically a pain relief procedure where a catheter is placed in the lower back of the women in labor so as to decrease the sensation of pain in the lower half of the body. But epidural too has certain side effects, the knowledge of which is essential for all women before they opt for it. Read on to know about the side effects of epidural.

1. Drop in blood pressure

One of the side effects that needs to be monitored carefully is the sudden drop in blood pressure of the mother that the epidurals can cause. This can indirectly affect the baby as the drop in blood pressure can affect the baby’s heart beat. Thus fetal heart rate has to be continuously monitored.

2. Backache, shivering and soreness

A woman may experience backache after getting the epidural. Shivering and soreness may also be noticed along with nausea or a feeling of ringing in the ears.

3. Trouble in urinating

Because of the catheter you might find it difficult to urinate.
