Acid reflux is another cause for dry cough. Generally, eating heavy or spicy food at night leads to acidity problems and if the acid reaches your esophagus it will irritate the throat and lead to dry cough. Occasionally, symptoms like heartburn or stomach pain will also follow the cough.

5. Serious underlying diseases

A dry cough can also signal serious diseases like cancer, emphysema, heart failure, collapsed lung, pneumonia to name a few. The symptoms will also vary accordingly. If you have a heart problem, the dry cough will be accompanied with red foamy phlegm. Other serious symptoms like shortness of breath, palpitation, change in vision, swelling in ankles or legs, bloody sputum along with a dry cough signals danger and you need to seek medical assistance immediately.
