5 Causes of Dry Cough

A cough is a very common condition, so why panic? Is that what you think? If so, you are wrong. A dry cough can sometimes be a warning symptom of an underlying serious disease. It can be as simple as an allergic reaction too. So, if you have a persistent cough for about two weeks that just doesn’t react to any medications, consult a doctor at the earliest. Check out 5 possible causes of dry cough.

1. Respiratory infection

A respiratory infection can trigger dry cough. Especially when the upper respiratory tract that involves the nose, sinuses, larynx and pharynx is inflamed due to a bacterial or viral action, it results in common cold. The symptoms are dry cough, fever, ear infection and so on. The symptoms including cough persists for about 2 weeks. If it goes beyond that, immediate medical attention is to be sought.

2. Allergic reaction

Dry cough can also be a symptom of an allergic reaction. If it is followed by itchy throat, redness and irritation in eyes, then there are high chances of allergy. Try finding out the allergens and stay away from it. You can also seek a doctor’s help to find out if an allergy is causing the cough, by doing an allergy test.

3. Side-effects of various medications

A dry cough can also occur as a side effect of various medications. Blood pressure medications called angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors can trigger a dry cough. If you feel that your cough has started after taking the medicines, check with your doctor and get it changed.
