All You Wanted To Know About Collagen Implants

Collagen is present in the dermis that is the layer below the epidermis (top layer of the skin)and is responsible for keeping your skin young, firm and fresh. But various factors such as sun exposure and aging reduce the level of collagen present in your skin and your ability to make collagen also reduces. Thus, your skin begins to sag, wrinkles appear and a kind of hollowness appears on your face. With aging, the wrinkles become deep and permanent.

Collagen injections are used to smoothen your wrinkled skin and make it plump again. This procedure is known as collagen implant or collagen replacement therapy. Your doctor may combine collagen injections with other skin resurfacing procedures such as botox and laser to get better results. As the injected collagen gets absorbed, you need to take injections again after some months to keep the look.

Collagen can bring back your plumpy skin without any wrinkles. It is used for treating depression in the cheeks, crow’s feet (lines at the corner of your eyes), lines running from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth, frown lines that form between eyebrows, worry lines and also smokers’ lines.

The main source of collagen injections is bovine. There are two types of sources for collagen injections – one is cow skin, that is sterilized for use and is a pure injectable collagen; while the other is human skin collagen. The human body accepts both these types of collagen. In fact, your own skin may also be used to produce collagen. Another source for collagen is porcine, but it may cause pain. After considering your body, the site of injection, the cost and other factors, your doctor will decide which is the best source and brand of collagen to be used for you.

It is not possible for everyone to inject collagen injections as that is for the doctor to decide after checking your medical history. Some people cannot receive bovine collagen injections and others are advised against any form of collagen. So, you should consult your doctor if you have a personal or family history of severe allergic reactions. If you have a doubt about allergic reactions, ask your doctor and he will inject a small amount of collagen just below the skin of your forearm to see if it reacts to your skin in a month. Bovine collagen can sometimes cause allergic reactions. This is rare, but it can happen.
