All You Wanted To Know About Chemical Peeling

Ever thought that your skin is too pigmented, sun damaged and wrinkled? Then chemical peeling is the answer for you. Chemical peeling is the process of replacing your old skin with a new one. Scientifically, it is also known as derma-peeling or chemexfoliation. As the name suggests, this cosmetic procedure involves peeling off the skin using chemicals and then you get a totally new layer of skin without wrinkles and lesser sun damage. Chemicals such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), trichloroacetic acid and phenol are the common chemicals used for this procedure. But your doctor may also use other chemicals to get the desired results.

There are three types of chemical peeling -superficial, medium-depth and deep. The types vary according to the strength and depth of the peeling chemical. After taking a look at your skin, the doctor will tell you what kind of peeling you require and also what results you want from the treatment. For instance, if you want to remove the fine lines and wrinkles from your face, then you should go for superficial peeling. But if you want to do away with deep scars and pre-cancerous sun damage, then you should go for deep peeling. With superficial peeling you can get back to work immediately, but after medium or deep peeling, you will have to wait for a few days to let the new skin surface.

There is a myth that chemical peeling stops your skin from aging. This is not true. No chemical or cosmetic procedure can stop your skin from aging, since aging is a natural process. All that chemical peeling does is that it removes your old, damaged skin and replaces it with a fresh looking one. Then it’s in your hands to protect your skin from the sun. If it’s exposed too much to the sun, then it will get damaged again. Also, chemical peeling may damage your skin by scarring it or leading to infections. Deep peels give more discomfort but produce better results.

Thus, it’s very important for you to talk to your doctor about all the aspects of the procedure you want to undergo and also the alternative procedures that may give same results. So let’s familiarize you with all the types of chemical peeling before you decide on which one suits you best.
