6 Fun Facts About Your Favorite Christmas Carols

Every tradition and ritual has a story behind it. Christmas carols are a big part of the Christmas tradition and one cannot imagine a Christmas without the merry voices singing out loud to the accompaniment of music. Just like our old nursery rhymes, Christmas carols too have a story or some interesting tidbit attached to it and the next time we sing our carols we do not have to be dumb about it. Knowing the history of the songs we are singing will make us appreciate it even more even if the fact is not so interesting. Here are some fun facts about your favorite Christmas carols.

1. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

This is a staple of almost all Christmas songs sung throughout the world. It has also been translated into many languages. Felix Mendelssohn was the one who composed the tune for “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and he did this as a tribute to the printer and inventor Johann Gutenberg.

2. Winter Wonderland

You would never believe that these were the circumstances behind this beautifully written song. Or perhaps the circumstances were the ones that makes this song this touching. Dick Smith wrote the lyrics for “Winter Wonderland” as he was recovering from a bad bout of tuberculosis in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

3. “The Twelve Days of Christmas”

In Australia there is a different version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. All the animals are replaced by wildlife from their country. It must sound totally alien to someone from America to listen to their version.
