Reasons Why Russia Wanted to Host the Winter Olympics

The 2014 Winter Olympics are held in the city of Sochi in Russia. The games have been scheduled from February 7 to 23, 2014. When the games began, there was much criticism and uncertainty about Russia as a host. However, Russia and its people are doing their best to impress the world through the grand event which will be closely observed by people all over the world. It goes without saying that when they bid for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, they knew what they were signing up for. Listed here are the top 4 reasons why Russia wanted to host the Winter Olympics:

1. Because Russia had bid thrice in the past

This is not the first time Russia endeavored to host the prestigious Olympic Games. They have bid three times previously before finally getting lucky. The first bid happened in 1991 and second, in 1995. Finally, in 2014, they managed to win and hosted the grand opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was markedly different than what was expected – it was classy rather than flashy.

2. Because Russia desires to get back its past glory

By hosting the Olympics, Russia wants to get its past glory back. Though the city of Sochi in which the games are held has plenty of weaknesses which could mar the country’s reputation and endeavor to re-establish itself in front of the world, but it surely does have promise as well. The whole air in the city and its enthusiastic people is that of having finally arrived and the desire to be here to stay.
