Fibers are very important for the digestive system and general health. Fibers come in two types-soluble and insoluble. The soluble fibers dissolve in the stomach and the insoluble ones remain intact till they are excreted from the body. Both these types of fibers help in the digestion and help reduce and prevent risks of stroke, hypertension and heart disease. There are a lot of natural occurring foods that are a great source of fiber. A lot of legumes, greens, vegetables and fruits contain fiber that is very healthy for the human body. Fruits especially are a great and tasty source of fiber and unlike legumes and vegetables can be enjoyed when they are raw. Here are some fruits that have relatively high fiber content per serving.

1. Apples

The saying ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’, is true when you consider the many benefits of apples. Not only does it have a lot of nutrients, it is also a great source of fiber, especially the peel. Do not peel off the apple but eat it with the skin. Just make sure you wash it thoroughly before you eat it to get rid of the dirt and the pesticides.

2. Berries

Raspberries and Blueberries are a great source of fibers. They are great when eaten raw and also taste yummy when taken with oats, cereals and mixed with ice-cream for dessert. These can also be snacked on without having to worry about calories.

3. Banana

Bananas are also a great source of fiber and they help a lot in the digestive process apart from being a powerhouse of nutrients.
