10 Best Road Trip Movies
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page”, said Saint Augustine. But then traveling is not everyone’s cup of tea. So instead, just head straight for your couch and switch on that good old idiot box and play a road trip movie. Though a lot of road-trip movies have been made over the years, we will only list some of the best from recent memory.
1. Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Watch Steve Martin and John Candy at their very best in this unforgettable comedy. It narrates the story of how Steve’s character comes in contact with John’s character on his way to Chicago for Thanksgiving and the misadventures that follow.
2. Dumb & Dumber
It is the story of two unbelievably stupid friends played by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. They embark on a journey across the country to the snowy town of Aspen to return a suitcase full of cash to its beautiful owner. In 'Dumb & Dumber', these amusing actors leave everyone they come across on the way perplexed by their antics.
3. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
This movie boasts of some of the best names in the business from Johnny Depp to Tobey Maguire. It is based on Hunter S. Thompson’s classic novel by the same name. This movie recounts his journey across Western America in his quest for the “American Dream”, accompanied by a large stash of drugs and alcohol in their convertible.
4. Y Tu Mamá También
Join the two friends Tenoch and Julio as they embark on a road-trip to the fictional beach of Boca del Cielo in the company of the beautiful Luisa. This movie might be too amorous for your taste but is still a must watch for Gael Garcia Bernal.
5. Road to Perdition
This is a Sam Mendes classic with Tom Hanks in one of his best performances ever. It recounts the journey of Mike Sullivan (Tom) and his son from Illinois to the small town of Perdition in Michigan as he tries to save his son and take revenge on his wife and younger son’s killer.
Okay, we admit that this one is not exactly a cinematic gem and the humor may at times be too slapstick to the verge of being gross. Yet, if you are looking for a hilarious Sunday evening, this is the movie for you.
7. The Motorcycle Diaries
Based on Che Guevara’s travelogue by the same name, the movie captures Che and his friend’s journey through South America and their adventures on the way. Although, it starts as a fun trip, their experiences on the way have a great impact on them and define their destiny.
8. Little Miss Sunshine
Abigail Breslin got nominated for the best supporting actress at the Oscars for her splendid performance in the role of Olive. She played a little girl in a dysfunctional family with dreams of winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far-off California.
9. The Darjeeling Limited
An under-rated classic by Wes Anderson, the film chronicles the journey of Francis and his two brothers through the heart of India in the train “The Darjeeling Limited”. It depicts their quest for their mother and how the journey changes their life and relationship.
