No, they do not taste like melons. Resembling the shape of a melon, this traditional Japanese bread is made from dough which is covered in a layer of cookie dough, generally crispy. The taste is sweet and if you’ve traveled Asia, you may know that there are many varieties of Melonpan which may be laden with chocolate chips, custard, flavored syrup or cream. If you are a sweet tooth, I recommend that you must savor the traditional Melonpan and its variants.

6. Naan – India/Pakistan/Afghanistan

I don’t think there are many Americans out there who haven’t got their hands on some hot curry and a Naan bread. If you are one of the few left out, I reckon you spice up your culinary experience with this fantastic bread from the regions of Southern Asia. Typically they are flat-breads and the dough is cooked in a ‘Tandoor’ which is a clay oven. It is voluminous and is usually laden with generous layers of butter or even exotic herbs/garlic to add seasoning and give the flavor an instant spark.

7. Vanocka – Czech Republic

Similar to the Brioche, Vanocka is rich in butter and eggs. A traditional Czech Republic bread, it is generally a stack of smaller braided portions to give it a voluminous look. Lemon and Nutmeg add flavour and color to this exotic variety and many locals also add almonds or raisins. Your search for that hardcore traditional bread ends here as Vanocka has many superstitions and customs attached to its baking process, making it very alluring. If you must attempt to bake this bread variety at home, be prepared to keep thinking of dear ones while making it, keep silver or other metals away from the bread and jump when the dough rises!

8. Pane Ticinese – Switzerland

The second Swiss bread on my favorite list, Pane Ticinese is known as the ‘Bread of Ticino’ as it was traditionally made in the Ticino, the southernmost canton of Switzerland. Do you crave for that softness in your bread? If you do, you will love the Pane Ticinese whose typical shape is that of smaller loaves which are meant to be broken by hand to reveal the soft texture of the bread. The magic ingredient for the softness is oil, which is added to the dough during preparation. Other ingredients include white flour, salt, and biga which is a mixture of water, flour and yeast. This bread is generally for everyday consumption and is a mainstay of any Swiss bakery.

Whether you are a bread lover or not, this list is sure to make your taste buds tingle. Note these delicious types of bread and put them on your ‘to-taste’ list during your travels.
