5 Differences Between Lumpectomy and Mastectomy

4. Differences in post-operation needs

In case of lumpectomy, depending upon the size of the tumor, the post-operation procedure does not need a breast implant as the breast looks almost the same as what it did before but in case of mastectomy, generally both the breasts are completely removed and depending upon the age of the woman, breast implant is done. If a woman is comfortable without her breasts, then an implant is not done.

5. Failure of lumpectomy might need mastectomy

Lumpectomy is a good option only if the cancerous cells are completely removed from the body. After lumpectomy, if the cells are seen spreading in the other parts of the breast, mastectomy has to be done followed by radiation therapy.
