7 Causes of Weight Loss in Women

Some amount of weight loss is what all women desire. While attempted and determinable weight loss is acceptable and normal, sudden and/or drastic weight loss is neither desirable nor healthy. It is important not to ignore unexplained weight loss. Although, you needn’t press the panic button, make sure you determine the causes to avoid any potential problems.

1. Depression

Depression can result in unexplained weight loss. Depressed people often find it difficult to cook, eat or rest. Lack of appetite and even the thought of downing food can create a very unpleasant experience. Counseling, constant expert intervention and anti-depressants help in combating the problems of depression and associated weight loss.

2. Hyperthyroidism

An overactive thyroid produces too much thyroxine. This accelerates your body’s metabolism levels dramatically thereby resulting in sudden weight loss, sweating and irritability. However, there are anti-thyroid medications that help in bringing down the pace of thyroid hormone production. But diagnosis and appropriate treatment are necessary to put an end to the problem.

3. Diabetes

The common misconception is that diabetes is associated with overweight and obesity. But on the contrary, unexplained weight loss is actually researched to be an early sign of diabetes. This is because there is increased urination and when glucose levels increase, muscle mass begins to shrink. Medications to control your insulin levels and early detection are some of the ways in which you can keep both the disease and weight loss at bay.

4. Celiac Disease

Some people are gluten intolerant. Gluten is a kind of protein found in wheat, barley and rye. So, when exposed to gluten, the body generates an immune response in the small intestine in such people. In a course of time, inflammation and potential damages occur in the small intestine lining that causes deficiency in nutrient absorption. Intestinal damage results in weight loss and diarrhea. Since, there is no definite cure for Celiac Disease; following a strict gluten free regimen is important to manage the symptoms.
