Reasons Alcohol may be Good in Moderate Quantity Suggests Research

Ever since men started drinking fermented drinks thousands of years ago, the merits and demerits of drinking have also been argued. It is true that alcohol affects the body in many different ways and it affects different people in different ways. The term ‘moderate quantity’ is debatable with a lot of people giving their suggestions about what exactly moderate drinking is. For general purposes it can be understood as drinking in which the benefits outweigh the bad effects. In the United States moderate drinking is taking one drink which is usually 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1½ ounces of spirits (hard liquor such as gin or whiskey). Each delivers about 12 to 14 grams of alcohol. The French diet rich in cheese and butter is said to be offset by red wine further increasing the good effects of alcohol. But researchers are not sure about the type of alcohol and moderate drinking. Here are some reasons as to why researchers think moderate drinking is good for the health.

1. Moderate drinking is good for the heart

This has been proposed after studies were conducted on men and women who had no cardiovascular disease and on people who were at high risk of a heart attack or a stroke. Alcohol in moderate quantity helps raise the levels of high density lipoprotein, HDL or good cholesterol that prevents heart diseases.

2. Moderate drinking also helps people with type II diabetes

Moderate drinking helps the body adapt to and be sensitive to insulin absorption; it also improves factors that influence blood clotting such as tissue type plasminogen activator ad fibrinogen.

3. It helps with digestion

A cup of wine or an alcoholic beverage before your meal increases your appetite and also helps with the easy digestion of food that you eat. Again, in this case, you need to know what you drink and how much to drink. Your drink must aid the eating process and not make you full and feel bloated.
