Sun-kissed skin is always highly desirable. Gleaming and tanned is how women like it and most men too. But sunburn is one thing that many fear and therefore avoid tanning. With these tips, get your share of sun-kissed skin sans the sunburn.

1. Say no to peak hours

While there can be a change of timing depending upon the season and the place you live in, it is better to avoid the sun and its horrid rays between 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

2. Get a base tan

Getting a base tan in a professional tanning salon before you step all out in the sun will prevent possible damage to skin from sunburns. The power of the base tan is at least six times more than no tan. This process is also called photoprotection. However, make sure you are visiting a responsible and efficient tanning salon.

3. Keep citrus away

Citrus oils and products must necessarily be avoided on the skin if you are planning to tan in the sun. Even if you accidentally use a product containing citrus oils, wash it off before the tanning process. Phytophotodermatitis is a sunburn like condition that occurs when the sun’s rays hit skin with citrus oils.

4. The good old method

Wear a sunscreen and it is an absolute must. The presence of SPF in sunscreens helps offer protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Sunblock is a stronger shield but an effective sunscreen can allow you to enjoy the benefits of a good tan. Applying the sunscreen at least 20 minutes before stepping out is important to receive its benefits. Similarly, if you plan to enter water, make sure you re-apply when you are out of it even though your sunscreen is water-proof.
