8 Ways to Overcome Conflict in Relationships

5. Step into their shoes

The best way to understand someone else’s point of view is to step into their shoes and see why they behave the way they do. The easiest way to do this is to have a heart to heart conversation with your loved ones about how they feel.

6. Talk it out

Some of us make the mistake of shutting ourselves and retreating into a shell when conflicts arise. This is counterproductive as ‘the silent treatment’ or stonewalling is never the solution. Communication is key. Make sure you are open about your feelings and let the other person know how you feel.

7. Don’t assume anything

Don’t create assumptions in your head about a particular situation or person and jump to conclusions. Verify with the other person if things are indeed the way you think they are. Assumptions do more harm than good.

8. Don’t generalize

Instead of saying, “You always do this,” point at particular instances of when you felt hurt by a person’s behavior and also explain why you felt so. This will also help the other person gain some insight into his/her own actions, thus ensuring better resolution of conflicts.
