Vaginitis usually occurs due to bacterial or yeast infections. The other causes of vaginitis include sexually transmitted infections or allergic reactions due to perfumed soaps, douches or vaginal sprays. Vaginitis can also be caused due to low estrogen levels during menopause, post-childbirth or pre-puberty.

By following healthy, hygienic practices and taking necessary precautions, you can prevent vaginitis. Avoid public baths, whirlpool spas and hot tubs. Avoid douching. Do not wear clothes, especially undergarments, that hold in moisture and heat. Choose loose, cotton clothes instead of nylon panties and tight jeans. Last but not the least, practice safe sex. If vaginitis happens because of sexually transmitted infections, your sexual partner will also have to follow medical advice along with you. So, the mantra is ‘Prevention is better than cure!’
