Why Do We Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick’s day is celebrated on 17th March every year, but very few people actually know the importance of this day. To understand why 17th March is celebrated as St.Patricks Day, one would need to know who St. Patrick was. St. Patrick was known to be one of the most renowned and patron saints of Ireland.

Birth and childhood

He was born in a very wealthy family in Roman Britain around the 4th century. However, very vague details are provided about his childhood. We do know that his father and grandfather were functioning as deacons in Ireland churches.

Captivity

When St.Patrick was about 16 years old, it is believed that pirates captured him. He was enslaved for almost seven years. People say that it is during this time that he was enlightened by the path of God and spirituality. In due time, he managed to escape from the pirates and traveled to Christianise Pagan Ireland. To live up to the spirituality, he studied and practiced for years to become a priest.
