7 Ways to Beat Postpartum Depression

4. Join a new parent group

After you start taking up on the role of a mother, you may sometimes feel that others don’t understand what you are going through. This could be either because they haven’t delivered a baby yet or because they are too young. You must find a group of people who are going through a similar phase. You can join a new parent group, or start one on your own. Having someone that you can relate to will help.

5. Have a positive self image

Many women suffer depression owing to all the changes that have happened to their bodies during pregnancy. They do not like the “new self” and miss having their old body. You must not let all this affect you negatively. Gaining weight is part of the pregnancy process and you should embrace it. Learn to appreciate the way you look and try to focus on the positives and not the flaws.

6. Take proper rest

If you have chronic sleep deprivation, then there will be a drop in your serotonin, a hormone that regulates mood. Also, if you are constantly stressed out, then your body will produce more adrenaline which will again hamper the production of serotonin. Both during and after pregnancy, you must give priority to the needs of your body and must take proper rest.

7. Exercise

It may be the last thing that you want to do after pregnancy as you might feel too exhausted to exercise. However, exercise stimulates the growth of neurons that can help you stay in a better mood. You need not have a lengthy regime. Just make it a point to do light to moderate exercises every day.
