Top 8 Reasons For Swollen Ankles

5. Lymphedema

This is a condition in which excess of the lymph fluid gets collected at a certain part of the body, and is mostly a side effect of cancer treatments, radiotherapy, certain other bodily infections etc. When the fluid collects, it causes swelling in that area.

6. External or Internal Infections

Maybe something has bitten you or your foot has rubbed against something allergic. You could have also consumed something to which you are allergic, which could lead to such swellings. It’s important to consult a doctor in such a scenario, as he/ she would be able to analyze and pinpoint what exactly the root cause to the problem is.

7. Cellulitis

This is a condition in which bacteria enters inside your body from an open wound or a cut etc. on your skin. It causes redness and swelling in some body parts, mostly the feet and the face.

8. Venous Insufficiency

The veins in the body work to pump the blood up into the heart. However, if the valves are dysfunctional for some reason, then it causes the blood to get leaked backwards into the feet and the legs, causing swelling over there.

In most cases, basic swelling goes away by resting your feet, alternating hot and cold water treatments or basic oral medication and massaging with ointments and oil. However, if the condition is serious, then the treatment may take longer, depending on the cause of the problem. It’s best not to neglect prolonged swelling and consult a doctor soon, in order to prevent the condition from becoming severe.
