Top 3 Causes Of Eyebrow Hair Loss

The arches above your eyes are like crowning glory. They define your face and outline your eyes. Eyebrow hair loss can be an embarrassing condition to deal with. Although it is a relatively rare occurrence, it can happen to anyone nevertheless. In fact estimates say that almost four million people every year suffer from eyebrow hair loss. Let us look at some of the causes of eyebrow hair loss.

1. Genetic Causes

The most common cause of eyebrow hair loss is a condition called alopecia areata. It is a genetically inherited disease. This usually causes hair loss from the scalp in random areas, but this can also cause eyebrow hair loss in many cases. Unfortunately, very little is known about this condition. Most of the time, the condition subsides on its own, but if it does not, there is not much natural cure for this.

2. Excessive Rubbing

Eyebrow hair loss can also be caused by excessive rubbing or constantly plucking your eyebrows. Even applying eyeliner/pencil too hard for a long duration can lead to eyebrow hair loss. Eyebrows are attached o follicles, like any other hair on the body. Thus anything that damages follicles can also cause damage to the eyebrows.

3. Diseases

Anything that affects the hair also affects eyebrows to some extent. Skin infections like eczema can cause eyebrow hair loss, although the infection is not the actual cause but constant itching can make eyebrow hair fall out. A condition called as Heterzoge’s Disease can also lead to hair fall in your outer eyebrows. Eyebrow hair loss has also been connected to low thyroid hormone levels or with other hormone imbalances.

It is very difficult to point out specific reasons for eyebrow hair loss. It can occur due to stress, diet deficiency, cosmetics, excessive waxing etc. Eyebrow hair loss is also known to occur in women during menopause. Like any other hair on the body, eyebrow hair also gets thinner, weaker and tends to fall off over time with age. Generally eyebrow hair loss may just be temporary and may rectify over time, but it is always better to get it checked by a doctor, in case of doubt. There are also many homemade and cosmetic remedies which can partially or completely restore eyebrow hair growth.
