Things to Know About Ectopic Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful time as well as a scary time for any woman. She goes through a lot of changes both emotionally and physically. Not only does she have to be concerned about her own self but she is also worried and constantly thinking of the baby growing inside of her. Although a lot of women undergo a normal pregnancy where the fetus grows into full term inside the mother’s womb, some women aren’t so lucky. Of all the complications that can arise during a pregnancy, ectopic pregnancies are the most traumatic and the most fatal if left undiagnosed. It is very important to consult a gynecologist throughout your pregnancy to know if your pregnancy is normal. Here are some things to know about ectopic pregnancy.

1. What is ectopic pregnancy?

Ectopic pregnancy is one of those abnormal pregnancies where the fetus grows not inside the mother’s womb like in a normal pregnancy but grows outside of the womb, either in the outer wall of the uterus or the fallopian tubes.

2. Why is it dangerous?

It is dangerous as it is abnormal. The fetus puts pressure on other internal organs of the mother and can cause excessive bleeding in the mother. Also since there is not enough space for the fetus t grow or get proper nutrients, the fetus can never attain full term. Before it turns fatal for the mother, the pregnancy has to be terminated.

3. How do you know if you have an ectopic pregnancy?

There will be excessive vaginal bleeding, unbearable pain in the stomach and fainting spells when you have an ectopic pregnancy. It is difficult to find out through ultrasound in the early stages of your pregnancy but should be obvious in the later stages.
