The Effects of Violent Video Games On Kids

Catharsis Theory

This is the exact opposite of imitation theory. It says that every person possesses an animal instinct, so is it with children. Video games allow them to give vent out their wild instincts. They feel a kind of catharsis when playing video games. So, they will not feel the attacking instincts in real life. According to this theory, video games are kind of a buffer on which children can shed their offensive habits.

Social Recluse Theory

This theory does not challenge any of the above theories. It simply proposes that children who are addicted to video games are likely to become social recluses. They are likely to pursue an introvert lifestyle.

If your kids are showing too much interest in video games and computer games, try to keep them engaged in some other activities. If it does not work, do not forcefully prevent them from playing video games. Let them play the games. It is natural for children to get involved seriously in some new things, especially something as exciting as video games. If the habit does not go away even after the child grows up, you need to get the help of a counselor.
