Aside from living with another individual, you need to make a decision if you can live with his last name. Here are 5 reasons you should refuse to take your husband’s last name.

1. The name might not suit your first name

Your husband’s last name perhaps suits him but may not necessarily sound great with yours. When you change your last name for your husband’s sake, you need to make sure that you’re happy; it becomes a part of your identity.

2. Giving up your last name is like abandoning your identity

For many their last names have been a large part of their identity. The signature, the way you introduce yourself to new people, colleagues, putting down a new last name on legal documents and bank forms. You need to be comfortable with this kind of identity assimilation. If you have had an inter religious marriage or with a person of a different nationality, you will have to deal with an identity crisis.

3. It is a mark of your heritage and pride

For many women, their last names are a great part of their rich heritage and pride. Their ancestors have established their names with their accomplishments and stripping their name and taking a different last name which does not belong to them can be difficult. If people know you by your last name and the actions of your parents or ancestors, your husband will understand why you refuse to take his last name.
