Foods You must Avoid If You have Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism, also known as thyrotoxicosis, is a condition which is caused by excess thyroid hormones in the body. If you are suffering from this disease, it is important to know the types of foods you must avoid to bring down the symptoms of the same. The right diet along with the right medication will help improve your condition. Check out some foods you must avoid if you have hyperthyroidism.

1. Foods high in iodine

Iodine enhances the activity of the thyroid gland. Therefore, if you are suffering from hyperthyroidism, it is important that you stay away from foods that contain iodine. It is best to avoid sea foods, kelp and seaweeds that contain high amounts of iodine. You should also stop using iodized salt as it contains good amount of iodine.

2. Enriched flour

Enriched flour comprises lesser nutrients than whole grains and is difficult to digest. Being a high glycemic food, it can cause a disruption in the hormone and sugar levels in the body. Taking in foods that have lower glycemic index can help to restore the healthy hormone levels including thyroid. It is best to avoid enriched bread, pasta, cereals and snacks; instead you can consume whole grains such as barley, brown rice, whole wheat breads, popcorn and the likes.

3. Red meat

Red meat has excess saturated fat that is detrimental to the hormonal balance of the body. If you have hyperthyroidism, along with high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and heart diseases, it becomes difficult to recover from hyperthyroidism. Hence, it is best to replace red meat with lean meat sources like tuna or salmon. You must also stay away from fried, processed meats, which contain additional fat.
