6 Weird Creatures You Didn’t Know Existed

Nature has endowed planet Earth with myriad species of animals. Some of them impress us with their exotic beauty while there are some others whose one glimpse can make us nauseate. There are some other creatures that make us wonder about their existence. Enlisted below are some such weird creatures.

The Okapi is a native to Democratic Republic of Congo. This rare animal has the combination of the head of a giraffe and the striped pattern of a zebra. Earlier, the okapi was believed to be a myth and only in 1902 did the world confirm its existence. The okapi is also called the African Unicorn.

This flightless bird from New Zealand was considered to be extinct from 1898 but its sighting in 1948 revealed that there are still a few alive on the island. The takahe with its distinct red beak is considered to be one of the most endangered birds with around 200 of them left.

Solenodon

3. Solenodon

Solenodons are nocturnal and venomous creatures found in Cuba and the Caribbean. Solenodons feed on insects and are burrowing animals. These mammals are the only ones that inject venom into its victim's body. Along with some of the rare creatures on this list, the solenodons were also believed to be extinct until confirmed sightings in 2003.

4. Coelacanth

Regarded as one of the oldest creatures on the face of the Earth, the Coelacanth was believed to be extinct 65 million years ago but was rediscovered and sighted along the coast of South Africa in 1938. These sea creatures can grow up to 6-7 feet minimum in length. Off late, the sightings of these sea creatures have been spotted more along the coast of the African continent.

This small mole can be easily recognized with its distinct nose. The star nosed mole, in accordance with its name, has eleven pairs of fleshy appendages that acts as a sensory organ. Found in Canada and the United States, these moles can scare many people who do not know of their existence. Their unique sensory organ is used to identify food by touch and these moles are present in good numbers. Though people along the region of its existence know its presence, many across the world believe such a creature does not exist.

These critically endangered underwater creature are rare ones. Found in the lakes of Mexico City, these are of great interest for scientists as they have the ability to regenerate limbs.
