Common Complications Which Happen During Labor

Labor is everything but what we see on TV or in the movies. There is a lot of pain involved for some; some have it easy and lot of women go through a difficult delivery every year. They sweat it out for hours in the delivery room and end up coming out totally exhausted and disheveled. A few times, things go wrong, when the baby cannot get out easily, when the mother gets too tired to push or there are some other serious complications that require surgery to save two lives. Certain complications occur during labor even when the mother has been checked thoroughly during her pregnancy and no complications are expected. It is always good to be prepared and also be knowledgeable about what complications you could expect during labor. Here are some common complications which happen during labor.

1. “Fetal Distress”

It is no longer a term that is commonly used by doctors, but if you hear someone saying it when you are going into labor, it means there is a problem with the baby, mostly a reduced heart rate. In such cases, the baby has to be taken out of you immediately and most probably the doctors would opt for a C-section or take out the baby using a forceps or a vacuum extractor.

2. Malpresentation or baby breech

This happens when the baby is sideways, feet first, or lies at an awkward position that makes it difficult for it to come out. You can try out different positions that would help the baby regain the normal position or the doctors might try to put pressure on your abdomen to move the baby into position. If nothing works, you will be scheduled a c-section. A c-section is necessary in these cases as there are chances that the baby’s head might get stuck in the birth canal.

3. Placenta Previa

This happens when the placenta covers the cervix making it difficult for the bay to come out. This mostly happens during late pregnancy, but if it persists when you are going into labor, a normal delivery would e ruled out and you will be prepared for surgery. Know from your doctor what made them choose a c-section over normal labor before you or your partner give consent.
