5 Best Movies of Natalie Portman
There are very few child actors who grow up to become impressive stars, mostly because they have been given a challenging role to start with when they are making their debuts. Natalie Portman is one such actress, who made her debut at the age of 12 in the film ‘Leon: The Professional’, playing an apprentice to the hitman (Jean Reno). When the film released, people knew that this was one child artist they must follow for sure, as her future seemed extremely bright. As she grew up, Portman took up more interesting adult roles, and proved that she could pull off almost any kind of character with ease and confidence. Here are some of the best films of her career.
1. Black Swan (2010)
The character of Nina in the film (a ballerina based in New York, trying very hard to become her company’s lead dancer) required bravery, the kind only Portman could have shown. The film was hanging in the air with uncertainty since 2001, when financers were still being searched for. But Portman kept her ballet training on with full dedication all those years, and in fact, doubled her efforts when the movie got a green signal finally. Her acting ability, as well as her dancing skills were praised a lot in the film, and she surely impressed the critics and the audiences all over the world.
2. V for Vendetta (2005)
This film was an adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel, and didn’t really do too well at the box office. However, critics definitely loved Portman in the film. She proved that she could go to any extent in order to do challenging roles with her heart and soul, and that’s exactly what she did by shaving her head for the film. Again, this is the kind of bravery and maturity in making career choices that only a few actors have, and Portman is definitely one of them.
3. Closer (2004)
Closer was a movie that gathered a lot of appreciation for its script and the actors, which by the way also included Jude Law and Julia Roberts, apart from Natalie Portman. Even though the film didn’t really hit the ‘perfect’ mark, the layered characters and the focus on human drama and emotions were well shown. Portman played the role of a stripper named Alice, and totally made the ticket price worth it. A smart and a brave career choice this was, for many more interesting roles came her way after this film.
4. Garden State (2004)
This was perhaps, Portman’s ‘cutest’ performance by far. A sweet and charming girl from the neighborhood who lights up each frame of the film with her brilliance and absolutely stunning screen presence, Portman was simply like magic. Though it’s the kind of movie that is not necessarily outstanding, it definitely is worth a Sunday family watch. Portman’s fans will love her in this film.
5. The Other Woman (2009)
This film did not receive great reviews, and was accused of clumsy direction too. But if someone managed to make the film even a one-time watch, then it was Portman, who effortlessly played the complex character of Emilia, the other woman in Jack’s (Scott Cohen) life. The death of her infant daughter coupled with the jealousy of her husband’s ex-wife torture her, and Portman, with her sheer acting brilliance displays the pain and the turmoil very well. Even though the film was not a commercial success, it is definitely worth a watch for all Portman fans.
Needless to say, these are not the only films of Natalie Portman in which she has acted well. Her performances were great in many other films like ‘Anywhere But Here’, ‘Brothers’, ‘The Darjeeling Limited’, ‘Cold Mountain’, ‘New York, I Love You’, ‘My Blueberry Nights’ and many more.
