Ways to Prevent Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a cancer of the skin that is caused by a lot of factors such as overexposure to the sun’s rays, smoking, and exposure to chemicals, Ionizing radiation, environmental carcinogens, artificial UV radiation (e.g. tanning beds), aging, and light skin color. The type of skin cancer depends on the layer of skin the cancer if formed and grows. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma are the three types of skin cancer of which melanoma is the most dangerous and can be fatal if left untreated. Fortunately skin cancer can be prevented and here are some easy and simple things you can do every day to prevent skin cancer.

1. Stay away from the sun between 10 am and 4pm

The sun’s rays are the harshest between 10 am in the morning and 4pm in the evening. Try to stay away from direct sunlight as much as possible. Do not expose your skin too much to direct sunlight when it is really harsh and hot.

2. Do not get burnt

Sun bathing can be fun but do not stay in the sun so much that you turn all red and get burnt. This can be really harmful for the skin and can cause skin cancer in the long run.

3. Avoid excessive tanning, tanning beds and tanning oils

It is true a tan would look great on you, especially when you stay in colder regions, but you should also realize that tanning and excessive tanning can cause skin cancer and can also make your skin look all leathery and stretchy.

4. Stay in the shade as much as you can

If you have to spend a lot of time in the sun due to work or other commitments, try to stay in as much as shade as you can.
