7 Tips to Stay Calm in Times of Crisis

Do you fail to deal with a crisis every time simply because you get nervous, anxious and stressed out? To tackle a crisis, you must remain calm and free your mind from worries and stress. Here is how you can remain calm in times of crisis.

1. Take a few deep breaths

One of the first things to do when faced with a crisis is to stay calm. You can do this by taking a few deep breaths which will calm you down. You must remember that being physically calm is the first step towards tackling a crisis of any form.

2. Control your knee jerk reactions

Unwanted knee jerk reactions can be very harmful during a crisis. Regardless of the type of crisis you are facing, knee jerk reactions can spoil even the best plans of action. Keep reminding yourself every time that you are facing a traumatic situation to avoid such reactions.

3. Don’t try too hard to set things right immediately

Stressing over the fact that you have set things right will lead to more mental pressure and more tension. Don’t worry about setting things right immediately because there are no instant answers to most crises in life including those in relationships, family or work. Be patient and don’t stress about fixing things in an instant manner.

4. Be sure of what you want

When you try to stay calm in a crisis, one of the most important things is to have a goal in sight. You must be sure of the solution that you want and you must also have a vision as to how you want things to progress. If you are not sure of what you want, there will be more confusion which will lead to indecisiveness. You cannot afford to have bouts of confusion and indecisiveness when you are trying to deal with a crisis.

5. Focus on the most important task at hand

Whenever you get nervous or anxious during times of crisis, always remember that focusing on one important thing will remove the worries from your mind. Focusing on a specific action or decision will allow you to remove all unnecessary thoughts that would otherwise hamper your decision making process. To be calm, you will need to mentally focus on a single useful thing.

6. Take help from close friends or family

To be level headed during a crisis, you can take help from your friends and family. Confide your worries in someone who will keep all your secrets. Ask that person for help and for his or her views. An external approach to your crisis will help you get an objective view of the situation. A conversation like this can help yield new solutions and will also help calm you down.

7. Reward yourself when you walk over tiny hurdles

Dealing with a crisis is a long and strenuous journey. Whether it is your relationship, job, college or something else, bringing a solution to a crisis can take days, weeks or even months. There will be many hurdles along the way which you will have to cross from time to time. Reward yourself every time you cross a tiny hurdle. These rewards can be in the form of self-appreciation, gifts, new purchases or a short holiday. Giving yourself rewards for working hard will allow you to de-stress and stay calm during crises.
