1. Birth and background

Kathryn Bigelow was born on November 27, 1951 in California to Gertude Kathryn and Ronald Elliot Bigelow. Her mother was a librarian and father was a factory manager. Painting was one of her first creative pursuits before she formally enrolled in training of art and film.

2. Kathryn Bigelow is James Cameron’s ex-wife

Not many people know this but Kathryn Bigelow was married to Academy winning filmmaker James Cameron from 1989 to 1991. Some of Cameron’s famous films include The Terminator, Aliens, True Lies, Titanic and Avatar. Kathryn Bigelow is also said to have been influenced by her ex-husband’s work and vice versa. Interestingly, both of them were nominated in the Best Director category at the 82nd Academy Awards. The award was eventually won by Kathryn Bigelow for Hurt Locker.

3. Her previous films

Kathryn Bigelow’s claim to fame has been through Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Before shooting into limelight, she made movies including The Loveless, Near Dark, Blue Steel, Point Break, Strange Days, The Weight of Water and K:19: The Widowmaker. Kathryn Bigelow is said to have begun making her mark as an auteur with some of these films, all of which were not commercial successes.

4. Kathryn Bigelow was into acting and modeling

A little known fact about Kathryn Bigelow is that she dabbled in a little bit of acting and modeling before she became a filmmaker. She was a model for a Gap advertisement in the eighties. She acted in a movie titled Born in Flames in 1983 and starred in a music video titled Reach which was directed by her ex-husband.
