5. Forms of sunscreens

Sunscreens are available as lotions, gels, creams, wax strips, prays and ointments. Each form is meant to suit different uses. For example, sunscreen roll sticks can be used in sensitive areas around the eyes where as gels are convenient to use over areas with hair such as the scalp. Sprays are known to be suited to children while ointments can be applied to all parts of the body.

6. Sunscreen strength

FDA guidelines state that all good sunscreens must retain their strengths up to three years. It is further recommended that an old bottle of sunscreen that has changed its color or consistency should be replaced. A sunscreen that has crossed its expiration date must also not be used.

7. Areas of application

Many people apply sunscreen only to instantly visible areas of the body such as face, hands and legs. But many others recommend sunscreen application on every nook and corner of the body including, hair, scalp, toes and ears.
