7 Best Houseplants to Purify the Air

Keeping plants at home does not only benefit one aesthetically, there are a host of other more practical benefits that come with including houseplants in your interior decoration plan. For one, some houseplants are known to have air purifying qualities, thus keeping your personal space free of pollution. Apart from producing clean air, these plants are also said to reduce stress and make one more calm and peaceful, making them ideal for placing in workplaces too. Here are some houseplants for a better living.

1. Chamaedorea sefritzii

Also known as the bamboo plant or reed palm, the Chamaedorea sefritzii is known to filter out benzene and trichloroethylene. This plant is ideal for keeping in shady indoor spaces. It may also produce small flowers and berries.

2. Philodendron oxycardium

The Philodendron oxycardium is also known as Heart leaf philodendron and is a climbing vine plant. This plant is good at eliminating formaldehyde from particleboard. It also battles VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Word of caution- this plant isn’t ideal if you have kids or pets as the leaves are toxic when eaten.

3. Hedera helix

Also known as the English Ivy, this plant is proved to reduce air borne fecal matter particles, making it ideal to be placed in washrooms. However, in some regions of USA, like Oregon and Washington, this plant is on the official noxious weeds list as it is an invasive species and may choke out other flora. Thus, it needs to be frequently trimmed and maintained.

4. Aloe plant

An aloe plant is a good tool to monitor the air quality in your home as when the air around it becomes too poisonous and polluted, the plant’s leaves will develop brown spots. It also clears the air of harmful chemical residue.
