6 Ways to Cope Up When Your Child Prefers One Parent Over Another

4. Let the ignored parent introduce something fun to the child

The ignored parent will make a mark in the child’s mind only when he or she is associated with something fun. Assuming that you are the ignored parent, think about what your child loves doing best. If playing with toys is the answer, think about how you can introduce an amazing new toy to your child which he or she will adore. Once your child associates having fun with you, he or she will start showing affection towards you too.

5. Don’t think about it too much

Favoring one parent over the other during infancy is known to be a perfectly normal phenomenon. Unless the situation goes out of control, don’t be obsessed about this too much. Your child will eventually grow out of this and start favoring both parents equally. It may just be a matter of time until the equilibrium comes in.

6. Insist on showing your love repeatedly even if you are the ignored parent

It is very natural for the ignored parent to feel terribly disappointed when his or her own child doesn’t show a trace of affection of belongingness. But instead of getting disappointed, continue to show your child lots of love. Your child may avoid you a few times, but there will come a point when he or she will succumb to your charms.
