Health Tips for Women in Their 50s

Congratulations! Having gone through thick and thin through 50 years of life with a husband, children, a job or more, you tend to be more relaxed now, knowing exactly what suits you best and with grown-up children, you can spend more quality time with your loved ones, doing things you want to. The foremost requirement is to stay fighting fit, as health in midlife can now be a risk factor. Here are some health tips which will keep you fit in your 50s.

1. Eat food that is healthy

Eating healthy food is a must. Cereals, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, lean or white meat, milk, juice and soups provide us with all the nourishment we need in the form of minerals, vitamins, calcium, iron, folic acid, potassium, protein, carbohydrates, omega-3 fats and phyto-nutrients. Bran, whole wheat bread and fruits such as oranges contain fiber that reduce the ‘bad’ cholesterol and prevent constipation; potassium prevents heart disease; vitamin D and calcium offset osteoporosis; while, phytonutrients prevent changes to the DNA, delay aging and prevent cancer.

2. Drink lot of water

Drinking plenty of water expels toxins, prevents constipation, maintains body fluids, gives a healthy complexion and is nature’s remedy for dehydration. But, it’s recommended that this is the time when you should reduce your intake of salt and sugar.

3. Watch out for Menopause symptoms

Many women go through menopause in their 50’s. Symptoms manifest in the form of changes in the menstrual cycle, hot flashes, palpitation, irritation, lack in concentration, sudden bouts of depression, disrupted sleep, insomnia or the ‘restless legs’ syndrome. Take good care of yourself during this period.
