5 Tips to Control Low Blood Pressure

Feeling dizzy, weak or weary of late? Check your blood pressure (BP) as most probably a dip in your pressure might be the culprit. If your blood pressure drops below the normal range of 120 (systolic)/80 (diastolic), you have low BP. You might even faint as the flow of blood to the heart, brain and other vital organs reduces due to the condition. Low blood pressure or hypotension can result due to lack of nutrition, poor diet habits, loss of blood or stress. With appropriate lifestyle changes, you can control low BP. Enlisted here are some tips to control low blood pressure.

1. Eat a balanced diet

Malnutrition is a vital cause for low blood pressure, so eating a balanced diet is very essential to keep hypotension at bay. Ensure that you get sufficient calories, vitamins and proteins from your diet. For breakfast, eat oatmeal or whole grain cereals and low fat milk. Brown rice coupled with green vegetables and chicken or turkey will do for lunch and dinner. Have nuts or salads as snacks. It is better to avoid oily or spicy foods that can affect the digestion process. Eat smaller meals frequently instead of heavy meals at a time.

2. Drink enough fluids

In order to control low blood pressure, it is mandatory to stay hydrated. When you are dehydrated, the viscosity of your blood increases and as a result it narrows the blood vessels causing a dip in blood pressure.

3. Improve your sodium intake

Low sodium in the body results in drop in pressure. So an intake of about 10 gms of sodium via supplements or electrolyte drinks help to control BP. Too much of sodium is also detrimental as it leads to negative effects.
