5 Things to Tell Your Child if You are Getting Divorced

4. Tell your child that his/her family remains the same

If the relationship between your family and your spouse’s family is amicable after getting divorced, then you may want to explicitly convey this to your child. He/she should know that going to his/her grandparents’ place, meeting an uncle or aunt or hanging out with any cousin is perfectly fine. The change in your equation with your spouse should not change your child’s world drastically.

5. Explain your child the reasons of your split, honestly but tactfully

Your child has the right to know about the reasons of you getting a divorce. If your child is old enough to understand such complexities it is better for you to state the reasons of your divorce clearly. You don’t want a third person to tell your child the reasons of your divorce. You may initially feel hesitant to discuss this issue with your child, but once you get it off your chest you may feel much better about handling your child.
