5 Foods You must Eat If You have Hyperthyroidism

Foods You must Eat If You have Hyperthyroidism

When your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroid, you experience a condition called hyperthyroidism. There is a widespread misconception that hyperthyroidism can be cured by following a strict diet. There is actually no diet for hyperthyroidism, as such. Having said so, it is also true that a proper diet can help limit certain mild hyperthyroidism symptoms. Here are a few dietary additions for hyperthyroidism that can actually help you maintain a healthy body weight, until your thyroid gland attains stability.

1. Calcium-rich foods

You like it or not, you need to add a lot of calcium-rich foods in your diet to fight hyperthyroidism. As hyperthyroidism causes a drain of vitamins and nutrients from your body, it leads to brittle bone condition. To fight it, eat a lot of calcium rich foods like low fat milk, broccoli, spinach, green leafy vegetables, beans, almonds, okra, canned fish etc.

2. Vitamin D-rich foods

Research has proved that deficiency of Vitamin D may lead to an increase in the level of parathyroid hormone and also decrease bone mineral density in hyperthyroidism patients. Foods such as fortified cereals, fish, cod liver oil, and mushrooms are rich sources of the ‘sunshine vitamin.’

3. Antioxidant-rich food

The free-radical damage to body tissue can be attributed to increased level of thyroid hormones. To fight the damage, antioxidant-rich nutrients such as beta carotene, Vitamin C and E are vital. Fruits like plums, cherries and berries and vegetables like tomato are great antioxidant suppliers.
