13 Ways to Help The Community in 2013

8. Help depressed people, promote mental well-being

SAMHSA will be celebrating their second National Prevention Week in the spring of 2013, preceding which they will host the Prevention Day on February 4, 2013 to bring members together. You can do your bit by getting your community to host a health fair, block party, memorial walk, educational assembly or outdoor event for raising awareness about issues concerning mental health and substance abuse. You can also help in building a support base for prevention practices, and those that promote mental, behavioral and emotional well-being.

9. Fight to stave off hunger

There are millions of children who are deprived of food in America and elsewhere. By joining a program, such as Revolution Hunger, you can raise awareness about this in your community. You can also ask your family, friends and neighbors to sponsor your activities when you work for food, and the money you raise will help save malnourished children in other countries.

10. Work for the environment

There are organizations galore seeking to get communities to save the environment. You can learn to reduce or reuse the water available; join a Walk for Water to raise money that is sent to developing countries to get water for their schools; assist the Earth Savers Club that believes in recycling old, torn, new or any kind of umbrellas; begin a Meatless Monday Campaign in your community to learn of the benefits of going without meat for one day each week; raise awareness about the Earth Day by hosting a Scavenger Hunt on that day and clean your neighborhood; or, develop a patch of lawn as a home for wildlife, in your community or your own backyard.

11. Educate young children

There are various measures you can take to help small or growing children in need. You can raise funds for First Book who supply books to needy children. You can even tutor or mentor children on your own, or work with United Way, to help them to succeed in life. You can help to prevent teen drug abuse and obesity, or educate teenagers in how to deal with bullying in school and distractions faced by them when they drive; or, you can join a Purple Pinkie Project in your school/community in the bid to end polio by raising awareness and money for this.

12. Build a bridge over troubled waters

Aim at bringing together young people practicing different traditions to discuss the concept of shared values; work in your community to raise money and awareness for refugee children in USA and elsewhere; join the YMCA and become a global activist by supporting one of their programs for a third world country; help in creating awareness about human rights issues through the social media; or, just be a good neighbor by providing shelter, dignity and caring to families who’ve got lost everything due to a disaster.

13. Bring your community closer

Join as a District Captain with ServeNext to serve your community if you have the passion for performing voluntary service, for which you will be required to put in about 10 hours each month, work for a program and interact with other members and the state service commission, while you create awareness about a particular project in your community and help in building a network of national supporters.
