Dark circles under eyes? They are one of the most frustrating health and beauty problems faced by millions of men and women around the world. Here are some of the commonly known and unknown reasons for dark circles under eyes. Read along and know what you can do to prevent them in the first place.

1. Aging

Aging has been identified as one of the biggest reasons for under eye circles. Skin under your eyes is the thinnest and with age, skin begins to thin further due to loss of subcutaneous fat and it also loses elasticity. Blood vessels become prominent then, causing dark circles under eyes.

2. Lack of sleep

When you are deprived of sleep or are excessively exhausted, skin turns pale and skin under eyes that is thinner becomes paler. Blood underneath this skin thus becomes visible and appears darker or bluer. However, this condition is temporary and skin can return to its natural color when you sleep well.

3. Allergies

In many cases, allergies have been identified as an important reason for under eye dark circles. Any condition that makes you want to scratch or itch your eyes can cause dark circles. Similarly, allergies to certain foods or medications are also known to be common reasons to this problem.

4. Lifestyle problems

Besides food and sleep, lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking are proven reasons why dark circles under your eyes can be a real problem. When late night parties are regular and habits like smoking and drinking are a part of routine, dark circles under eyes are common. This is because smoking and drinking tend to dehydrate your body and dark circles are a sign of loss of water from the body.

5. Prolonged exposure to sun or ultraviolet rays

Prolonged periods of exposure to sun makes skin produce more melanin than is necessary giving it a darker color.
